Types
There are two types of cholesterol, LDL and HDL. HDL is commonly referred to as “good” as it helps remove LDL out of the bloodstream. LDL is used to deliver cholesterol into the bloodstream. High levels of LDL are dangerous whereas higher levels of HDL usually signify a more healthy heart and blood vessel system. While you don’t want either number to be significantly high, a high HDL is not always a bad thing, especially if the LDL level is also high.

Knowing how cholesterol works is important to keep your heart healthy. Making sure that you are regularly having your cholesterol levels checked will help ensure that you catch the level rising early, making it easier to get under control. Generally through diet and exercise, most people are successful at keeping their cholesterol levels in the acceptable range.
